Home Theater Lighting

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Light fittings are things that not many people think about very often. However, the way we light a room can make us feel a certain mood or enhance the atmosphere we want to create in that room. There are many types of light fixtures, fittings, bulbs, shades and stands to suit all areas of the home. That means both indoors and even outdoors where you might want to emphasize some special landscape feature.

Are you planning to redo a room? In this case, I know it concerns a home movie theater room, but it could be any room. I think that you should definitely consider light fixtures as one element to change. For example, you could start by changing the central, overhead incandescent bulb or tube light for sure.

My suggestion would be to install four or even six small wall-lights; these are not expensive and come in hundreds of colours and sizes to suit any pocket. The only drawback with wall lighting for your home theater, is that the wires would really have to be chased into the wall so as not to appear unsightly.

But, you could get around this by buying standard lamps. These are also available in thousands of designs, but they come with two disadvantages: trailing wires and a higher cost. They are easily moveable though. Small, table lamps is a similar alternative, but you may need more electrical sockets.

Once you have decided exactly on what style you want, have a dimmer attached to each either in unison or separately, up to you. You should probably keep one reasonably powerful light at the DVD end of the room just in case the equipment needs seeing to, but it too could be on a dimmer.

The effect can be stunning. And all from just changing the existing light fixtures and fittings. You could even go the whole hog and have an exit sign over the door or a few speciality lights higher up out of line of sight so that they are not distracting ” say, a 1970s style lunar lamp and a fibre-optic lamp, for amusement or as a talking point while waiting for the film or snacks to be prepared.

So, whatever style home theater lighting you are thinking of, contemporary or old style traditional, you will find many options to pick from – from different colors to different sizes and styles, there are many. You can find them on the Internet or in home improvement stores. I have made a link to one of my online favourites below.

And, when you do make the changes, you will notice that your home theater has taken on an ambiance all of its own and it will ” guaranteed ” enhance your home theater experience. It may be these subtle changes, room by room, that make you see your home in a completely different light.

Are Security Bars A Good Idea?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

There are many things that families and businesses do in order to safeguard their property. One technique that is often taken in the name of security is the addition of security bars to doors and windows. In spite of the inherent benefits of securing property, these bars often present risks of endangering the people inside.

One thing remains true, most burglars will keep moving rather than try entering into a home that has security bars on doors and windows. Home protection is the only security that these bars provide however for many, the risks involved in having these bars on windows is not worth the small measure of protection that is provided. In other words, the good of these bars is greatly outweighed by the negatives.

A lot of people do not purchase new security bars but rather rely on the same bars that have covered the windows of the home or business for many years. Some of these are rusted and nearly impossible to remove. In emergency situations, every second counts and these bars can be the very things that trap people inside a burning or flooding building.

Security bars are no longer the cheap alternative to traditional alarm systems and monitoring services that they were touted to be in the past. In fact, more often than not the present a greater risk than they are a benefit to business and homeowners. Many larger companies offer free installation of alarm systems and alarms as well as monthly monitoring services at reasonable rates. More significantly not only are these monitoring services presented for breaks-in, but also for fire and smoke as well as panic button services.

Security bars may have had a time and place, but they have been replaced by something that is much more effective at deterring criminals as well as something that provides a greater degree of protection for the most precious assets of any home or business – the people inside. The costs concerned in monthly monitoring seem great but most will find that the value this service provides if and when it is ever needed is well worth every penny.

Options to burglar bars that are not terribly expensive include planting thorny bushes below windows and keeping them trimmed back just enough that they do not block a view of the windows. Most burglars do not want a difficult entry point and they certainly do not want to be wounded during the process by prickly plants. Lighting is another option that is essentially less expensive than it would be to install burglar bars. Intruders do not want to be seen. If the area surrounding your home and business is well lit, it will serve as a deterrent. Investigate options such as this before resorting to security bars.

To answer the question of whether or not security bars are worth the risks for home or business protection the answer would be a loud “No!”. There are other preventative measures that can be taken in order to deter intruders that present far less risk to family members and employees. These alternatives should be implemented rather than those that pose further risks to those you are trying to look after.

Why Home Security?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

People have always tried to protect themselves and their families, just like most animals do. In very early days, cavemen protected their caves by setting fires outside the opening to discourage interlopers and wild animals. Later on, man learned how to augment his security by training dogs to safeguard him and his family. Later still, houses and then doors were invented; bars and locks arrived soon after that.

However, until a few decades ago in the west, people lived in extended large families. A family might consist of six-to-ten children and the mother and the grandmother would often live there too. This made home security systems extraneous from the early 18th Century to the 1930′s, which were quite peaceful times. After the Second World War, families were not so large and new families got their own house away from their parents.

Nowadays, both parents are likely to be working and the kids are probably at school. This means that many houses are left empty during the day, making them easy plunder for burglars. In fact, the number of household burglaries has risen by almost 10% in the last five years according to American government figures. Furthermore, according to a survey, forty percent of home burglaries were carried out due to insecure locks and doors.

ANSI (American National Standard Institute) created a standard for deadbolt locks for external doors which is very hard to beat. If you are worried about your exterior doors, you should seek these ANSI deadbolts out, but be careful, there are many copies. However, regardless of the kind of lock, the quality of the door is just as crucial. Its thickness and composition can also be a deterrent. After all, why put an elaborate deadbolt on a door made of cardboard?

There are about 14,000,000 home burglaries every year in the United States and many of them are preventable. The first stage that you should achieve in home security is well-built doors and sturdy locks. Deadbolts on exit doors is a good idea.

Once you have completed that, get some exterior security lighting that reacts to either motion or body heat. The former type are microwave and the latter passive infra red sensors. These sensors will also contain a daylight sensor so that they will only become active at night. The sensors will also save you money by activating the powerful halogen floodlights only when someone enters the scope of the sensor’s beam.

Once you have done that, you should think about a home security alarm system. This should include contact sensors on all outside doors and windows, vibration sensors on all widows to alarm you in case of breakage and PIR or microwave motion sensors in the corridors and hallways.

Then, if you want to go even further in your home security system, you can install surveillance cameras on each exposed wall of the house and maybe one in the interior too. You do not have to take all these precautionary measures at once, if you are short of cash, but they should be taken in that order.

Furnishing Your Home With Modern Furniture

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I recently bought a new home and I wanted to put some nice, new, modern furniture in it. I wanted to compare my options, so I looked at buying online or in a store. After looking around I found the perfect website for modern furniture.

One of my favorite things about this website is that they have a variety of colors and sizes for the different styles. I also loved the prices. For my living room I found the perfect modern sofa-right color, right size, and right price!

I was hooked when I started looking at chairs and realized they had so many modern furniture styles to look through. I found amazing wood chairs that would be perfect for my kitchen.

The chairs I picked now needed something to sit under, so next I started looking for a table to match. I found a dark wood, square table that was a beauty. The combination of the chairs and table had the exact modern look I was going for.

While I was buying the table and chairs I decided to look at a desk for my office. There were many to pick from on this website, I had no clue where to start. I found one with shelves and everything. It was perfect.

This website was full of modern furniture, I even found coffee and end tables that would match the dining room table, chairs, and desk. The coffee tables were unlike any I have ever seen. I found on in particular that I loved. It even had a place on the side for magazines.

I started looking for bedroom furniture and they had different sizes and finishes to pick from for several styles. I chose the style I loved and the color I was looking for in a size that fit my mattress–you can’t ask for more.

My shopping cart was almost full, but I couldn’t check out without a dresser. I didn’t even think about looking at any other modern furniture sites because this one had it all. Six drawers on an urban dressed sealed the deal.

This is a one of a kind website, in my search I found other modern furniture sites, but none that offered so many choices. It’s hard to pick just one thing because you can find lots of modern furniture here that would look good in any home.

Home Movie Theater Projectors

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Going to the movies is a very popular recreation especially for those young professionals living a considerably stressful life running corporate affairs. However, for those who cannot afford to waste time traveling to and from movie theaters, the answer to this recreational dilemma might be just inside their own house.

It is possible to recreate audio-visual systems of the movie theaters with your very own personal custom home theater system. The best custom home theater set up certainly can consist of high quality components that are capable of recreating the entire movie theater experience without having to drive from your house to the movie theater spending time and effort waiting in heavy traffic. This modern technology can give you the relaxation and experience that full-sized movie theaters furnish.

The basic components, such as a big screen and speakers with clear and flicker free images from a high quality DVD, can easily provide an almost-authentic movie theater experience. Home theater experts recommend that before you decide on the final set-up and equipment for your custom home theater system, the size of the location must be the first consideration.

So, if you have a small size room intended for your home theater system, a television may be best situated in the middle of one wall and three loudspeakers, placed on the left, right and center, might be enough to provide the surround sound you require from a custom movie theater. However, if you have a larger room, a home theater projector might be the best bet for recreating the “big screen”.

Home theater projector screens can provide an authentic movie theater experience. If you have a very large room for your home theater system, in combination with your home theater projector and home theater projector screen, you could add more speakers around the room. A further useful recommendation is that a subwoofer may also help to provide the optimum surround sound that will enable you to recreate the true sound of a movie theater in your own living room.

There are various designs and models of home theater projector you can choose from. You will need to understand the features of each one, before you decide on which one to buy. It may also be necessary for you to enlist the services of a home theater designer in order to get the home theater package that will give you the best entertainment. This will mean not needing to spend an unreasonable amount of time and money on your home theater system and home theater projector.

It is very easy to buy equipment with more capacity than you need for your home theater, especially if you not acquainted with the possible choices and the various requirements that your home theater may have due to the room’s measurements. The diagonal width of your home theater projector screen should be a function of the size of your custom home theater and the equipment in your custom home theater. For example, from where you intend to sit to the screen should be between two and five times the diameter of the screen. Therefore, looking at it another way, if you want to sit 10 feet (120 inches) from the screen, then the screen should be 24-60 inches, but it is subject to personal preference and depends on the viewers eyesight.

Your home theater designer could easily also suggest options that may not require a television set for your home theater. How is this so? The reason for this is the technological innovations provided by computers and home theater projectors. Home theater projectors like InFocus screenplay models can be used in conjunction with a computer in a small room set-up. Home theater projectors are also lightweight and may be transported easily. For this reason, a projector is very useful for use in custom home theaters and business presentations.

Home theater projectors and home theater projector screens can help provide a true cinematic experience. This kind of installation is extremely useful for business presentations and so it is becoming ever more popular. The combination of your custom home and custom office theater systems is a new phenomenon, which only a couple of smart consumers have dreamt up.

However, I am sure that being aware of all these options: ie, that a basic television set, three speakers and a DVD player can be perfectly adequate for people who only want a basic home theater, you may decide that you do not really need a home theater projector, especially if the room for your custom home theater system is not very large.

Enjoy a cinematographic experience right there in your very own home by thinking about your options carefully. Then you can experience the exhilaration a movie theater offers you without having to put up with boring traffic jams on the way to and fro from the movie theater.

This Modern Furniture Will Astound You

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Getting Started with Bedding Choices: These days, times are hard. Many of us want to add a new look to the same-old home that we’ve been looking at for a long time. There are many ways to go about adding a bit of modern design and modern furniture to our home. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to do this is to buy a new modern bedding set for your bedroom.

Which set is right for me?: Hundreds of designs exist for modern bedding, but you should choose one that fits the look and feel you are trying to have in your room. If you are planning on eventually replacing your whole bedroom set with some modern furniture, try to pick a bedding set that will go with your current room as well as the one you have envisioned.

Getting Started: Start with making a list of what you need. If you are starting from scratch, you will need sheets, pillowcases, and a bed cover. If you already have a bed cover and money is tight, you can purchase a duvet cover instead. This will give you that modern look that you are going for while saving you both money and wasted materials.

Upon looking at the different choices available, you will find that the modern sets frequently incorporate geometric patterns and bold colors or more natural designs with muted earth tones. The choice that you make will likely depend on the existing room color and your own personal preference.

Consider purchasing an entire modern bedding collection to get started, as this will give you all of the necessary pieces for the bed. Once you have the set, you can add on other pieces to change it up a bit, such as extra sheet and pillowcase sets.

Which brand is right for me?: Plush Living, as well as many other brands, has many excellent styles to choose from, including a modern damask pattern in a bold color selection, an over-sized leaf pattern, and a design that resembles the look of stone tiles.

The sheet sets that you can choose from are generally made of natural materials that are the perfect choice for modern bedding. You will be able to select from reed bamboo sheets and organic cotton sheets, which give the feeling of a very luxurious sheet set.

While you can choose a pattern that matches the bedding set that you have chosen, you can also add extra sets to keep on hand that are more neutral in color with only a minimal pattern. By selecting a neutral pattern or color choice, you will be able to use the same sheets if you change your bedding cover at a later time.

Advantages of Modern Bedding: Whichever pattern and color options you choose, you can be sure that the modern bedding will give a contemporary look to your bedroom. While you can make a few other changes for an added effect, this is the best place to get started.

Monitored Home And Business Security

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Many Americans are just starting to appreciate that advanced security measures are not only for the extremely rich. You just cannot get too much security for yourself and your family or your employees. The problems in society are getting worse too, not better. The current recession is hitting hard and splitting society even more into the have and have-nots, the working and the not-working.

However, these days burglars do not seek out the very wealthy, because they have all the protection that money can buy. The people most likely to be robbed and burgled are the working middle classes. They get robbed when they are at work and the kids are at school or when they are sleeping in their beds.

This is why it is essential to have the best automated security you can afford taking care of your home and family twenty-four hours a day. But it is not only your home, your business and workers deserve security as well. How many gun-toting lunatics have shot their colleagues dead in the last few years?

Not many firms can afford security personnel but you could get the next best thing, which is electronically monitored surveillance. There are various types of system available and most are flexible enough to be adaptable to any building. You could then monitor the system yourself during working hours by having a screen in the office or your home and send the signal to a security firm at other times of the day, at weekends and at night.

If you adopt this sort of system, you will be placing your home or office in the top echelon of secured properties and professional burglars will realize it and stay away from you and yours. Most people begrudge the monitoring fees, but the system falls down, if no-one is watching the image sent by the cameras. You could try to reduce this cost by monitoring the images yourself for part of the day and relaying the image to professionals when you are unavailable. You could also ask your insurance company for a discount and ask your accountant to put the expense down against your taxes.

The good thing about a monitored system is that you know that help is at hand twenty-four hours every day. You may be living alone or prone to fits or a heart attack. You could get almost instant help in these instances by pressing the panic alarm. These panic buttons can be positioned at the front and back door, in every room in the house or you could have a radio button on a necklace around your neck. These systems are quite common and are used by many care centres for the elderly or the infirm.

You will probably have to do some arithmetic to work out whether you need or can afford a monitored home security system, but there is no doubt that it is the most secure system available. However, not all home security monitoring companies are the same, so it is worth checking up with friends or with the companies’ governing body or even the local council to see if they have a good reputation.

An Automated Home Security System

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

These days people are becoming more concerned about their home security, chiefly because of the mounting crime rate. Even homes that have an older security system should be checked to see whether their security system is out of date or acceptable.

It is not so much that an older system may stop working, but technology advances very quickly and your sensors may not be the best variety or even the variety that suit your home the best.

The type of security system that you should be using can vary as the constituent members of your family changes. For example, if you have just had a baby, you could hook up a surveillance camera to the bedroom or put a motion sensor pointing along side a toddler’s bed so that you know if he or she gets up out of bed.

There are many varieties of security systems, including wired, wireless, monitored and Internet. The Internet wireless system is or at least can be fully automated.

That means that you can operate it through the hand set or any online device like a laptop or desktop computer. This means that you can check up on your home from your place of work or when you are away on holiday.

If surveillance cameras are part of your home security system, then you will be able to see and check up on your home on your computer monitor from anywhere in the world. If you connect sensors to some table lamps around your house, you will even be able to switch lights on and off to make it look as if you are at home when you are in fact hundreds of miles away. Put the TV on such a sensor and you can even switch that on and off as well.

If you put a surveillance camera in your children’s bedrooms and the living room, you could check up on the baby sitter or your business cash register on your WAP enabled mobile phone or PDA. This type of automated can be fitted by a competent DIYer, but is designed to be installed by professionals.

This type of automated system is very reassuring. Imagine being able to check up on your home, children or business by watching live video footage on any computer or Internet phone anywhere in the world!

An automated security system is not cheap, but is worth the peace of mind that it brings. You could get near total automated home or business security by the end of next week. Pay for it over time, if you have too, but they are not as costly as you may imagine
