Patio Heaters In Business

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

If you own a restaurant, pub or any business using outdoor amenities in a temperate climate zone, then you will know that custom is likely to drop off when the weather gets cooler. You know that you would not sit outside shivering yourself, so you do not count on anyone else to do it. The only answer is to modify the outdoor ambient temperature to an acceptable level.

I have seen this done to stunning effect in Prague in October when there were heavy snow storms. People wanted to sit outside and get pleasure from the snow storm as long as they were fairly warm. A person’s primary heat comes from the body and is retained with decent clothing, but it is nice to have a patio heater near-by just to add a glow to your face and hands.

If you have a business that only opens when it is warm enough, then you have an expensive business and these days expensive businesses do not survive long. You need to wring every last cent out of your business real estate and if that means putting patio heaters in, then that is what you should to do.

Patio heaters come in a range of guises, but they are not that expensive to buy. Sometimes you can rent them too. Most of these outdoor heaters run on bottles of propane or butane gas, but there are mains gas varieties too. There are also electric ones, but they tend to be costly to run, unless you can generate your own electricity.

I think that the best two types are the box type where the gas cylinder goes inside the apparatus and the heat is directed at foot to knee height and the street lantern style, where the heat comes down from about seven or eight feet in height. The gas container also fits inside these models lowering their centre of gravity and making them more difficult to unintentionally knock over.

These heaters are very safe although patrons should be advised to exercise care if they have young children with them. A standard heater will keep up to two tables and eight people warm enough to enjoy themselves even when it is snowing.

The lease of a few of these patio heaters or even their purchase will soon be off-set by your increased custom, particularly if your competitors are not using them. My wife and I will never forget our time in Prague, when it was snowing, drinking coffee and eating cake outside, watching people go by while we were as warm as toast due to the restaurateur’s prudence in providing patio heaters.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Astronomy – An Introduction

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Although astronomy is the oldest science, it continues to be at the forefront of not only scientific thought, but that of the public at large too. Who has not looked up at the galaxy while walking home late at night and wondered? Having said that though, the ancient people of certainly the northern hemisphere, but probably both, knew the movements of the stars and planets better than most of us do nowadays.

They knew even then, thousands of years ago, that the majority of stars seem to appear in the Eastern skies at night and travel on circular paths. They also noticed that some ‘stars’ were ‘wanderers’ (we call them planets) and that sometimes they travelled ‘against the flow’.

They also named groups of stars that we now call constellations or even galaxies and knew that those visible in the winter were different from those visible in the summer.and that others were visible all year round. The average common man of 5,000 – 10,000 years ago almost certainly knew more about the movement of the celestial bodies than the average common man of today does. (I mean men and women here, of course).

They learned how to calculate or at least locate the extremities of the sunrise and went to extraordinary lengths to mark those positions with huge stone structures, such as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, probably to facilitate the location of certain positions of the sun or other planets or stars, which may have been important to their religious beliefs or crop cycles.

In 1609, Galileo invented the first artificial device for studying the stars and planets. It was the first astronomical telescope and through it he was able to observe things millions of miles away that no one had ever seen before. Because of the deductions he drew from his observations, he clashed with the Roman Catholic Church and was often in serious danger for his life, so radical were his discoveries.

But mankind was not to be intimidated, and since then we have gone on to construct ever bigger and ever better astronomical telescopes with which we can even detect radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, infrared waves and gamma waves from outer space. Forty years ago, we even travelled to our Moon. and we have sent probes to eight of the nine planets in our Solar System, as well as to several comets and asteroids.

Where will we go next? That decision was always up to the government of the United States and the old USSR, but now there are other players in the field. What will China or India want to explore with their possibly slightly different outlook on life? Or will it be only a question of financial advantage?

The world may be in a state of change and power may be shifting from its traditional seats, but it has not lessened interest in questions that scientists think can only be answered in space. These are exciting times in the science of astronomy, but then man has always found astronomy enthralling .

Golfing For Novices: Part One

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Golfing has become phenomenally popular over the last 45 years, producing such world-class champions as Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods. Some first-class courses too have become household names; think of Wentworth, St. Andrews, Augusta and Pinewood.

But why should golfing have become so poplar with the public? Surely, it must be because a round of golf is a leisurely, but nevertheless, active, outdoor pursuit with a competitive side that can be enjoyed with friends but that can never be mastered.

Your achievements are tallied on your scorecard for all time and the desire to improve your game can encourage you to play again and again.

Here is a very basic lesson in golf for the person who hasn’t a clue about the game.

A round of golf is usually played on an eighteen hole course. Each hole has its ‘par’, which is the total number of tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short shots near the ‘green’) and putts on the green, it should take to sink the golfball in the hole.

The par number is based on the length and difficulty of the hole. Pars range from 3 to 6. If you get the ball in the hole in five shots on a par five hole, you “made par.” If it took you six shots, its called a bogie, if you made it in four, its a birdie.

‘Hazards’ or obstructions are usually placed before all the holes. Ponds, sand bunkers and trees are positioned in such a way as to make it more difficult to reach the green. Novice golfers should try to find a course with fewer hazards, which is therefore easier to play.

Players keep their own score of the total number of shots taken for each hole. After the eighteenth hole, they add up their scores and the one with the lowest is the winner.

It is vital that beginners to golfing should not take the game too seriously, because it takes a very long time to play golf proficiently, even if the professionals on TV make it look so easy.

Take a lesson or two at the start of your golfing ‘career’, because it will help you develop a proper swing and help you get off to a good start.

Marketing To The Masses

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

If you were to create a self-cleaning textile, the world may want to beat a path to your door to acquire some from you, but first of all they will have to know that the fabric exists, that it is available for purchase, and they have to know where your door is. This means advertising.

There are two types of advertising: institutional and product. Institutional advertising promotes the name of your business in general and product advertising markets a product or range of products or services. The type of advertising that a business needs, depends on the products or services that it provides.

Moreover, some kinds of advertising lend themselves better to institutional advertising rather than product advertising. For instance, a shop sign, a sign-written van or a promotional calendar are better suited to institutional advertising, while a newspaper or magazine advert would be better for advertising the latest special offer.

There are few facts and figures available that bring to light the extraordinary growth of the mass consumption society as well as those dealing with the expansion of the advertising industry. For instance, before the Second World War, US average annual expenditure on advertising per year had been about $2 billion for decades.

In 1950, as the post-war economy started to recover , American businesses spent $5.7 billion to advertise its goods and services. By 1960, that amount had doubled to $12 billion. By 1970, American business was spending $20.

Between 1970 and 1990, as the children Baby Boomers became adults and started earning and spending, advertising expenditure went through the roof, so that by 1986, it had reached $100 billion.

That phenomenal rate of growth could not be sustained, but by 1999, total expenditure on all forms of advertising exceeded $215 billion . The latest available figures are for 2007 and they stand at $280 billion.

In 1999, nearly 60% of all advertising dollars were spent on adverts in newspapers, magazines, on the radio and on TV. By 2007, that figure had fallen to about 54% as the Internet started to have an effect on advertising trends. These trends are expected to continue as every firm is expected to have its own website these days.

The country’s biggest advertisers are the manufacturers of cars, food, soft drinks, tobacco and beer and they filter most of their expenditure through about 13,000 advertising agencies., who usually create the ads and buy the space or air time from the media too.

These agencies have been transformed over the last decade by amalgamation. The most successful advertising agencies these days are huge international concerns. WPP, the largest advertising agency in the world, billed $37 billion in 2008 and had this to say about itself:

“Our total revenue in 2008 surpassed that of all our competitors, regaining the No.1 worldwide position for the third time”.

Astronomy – Important Dates Before Christ

Friday, August 6th, 2010

There is no uncertainty that astronomy is the oldest science and there is also no doubt that astronomy was being studied by everyone, not only the wise men, thousands and thousands of years ago.

We do not know exactly why they did it, but we can surmise that early man noticed a correlation between the weather and the stars, which were themselves not fully understood, of course.

Early man, probably even as far back as Neanderthal man, noticed the relationship between the weather and herd movements and crop growth, or at least fruit and nuts on local trees, if they did not have planted crops.

This means that people could see a connection between the stars and food availability. This relationship was probably ritualized into some sort of religion like early Wicca. Therefore, the stars became a very important part of the lives of every single person and it is likely that astrology and astronomy were widely intermixed by the average person.

However, there were also people who did not only use the stars as some vast celestial clock and who tried to make sense of the whole shebang. I am going to narrate below, eight of the most significant dates or years in the history of astronomy before Christ walked on the Earth. In no way forget that they had nothing but an abacus to do there calculations and no telescopes, which came about two thousand years later.

585 BC: Thales of Miletus (c. 625- c. 547), a Greek, predicted a solar eclipse in Asia Minor purely on the basis of his observations and calculations. It was not a lucky guess!

c. 400 BC: the astronomer Oenopedes (5th. century). also a Greek, announces that the Earth is tilted on its axis with respect to the Sun.

352 BC: the Chinese report what they called a ‘guest star’, a supernova, which was the earliest reported sighting.

340 BC: The astronomer, Kidinnu (b. Babylon c. 379 BC) discovers the precession of the Equinoxes, ie the apparent change in the position of the stars caused by the Earth’s wobbling on its axis.

c. 300 BC: a ‘committee’ of Chinese astronomers compile star maps of the visible universe.

c. 240 BC: Chinese astronomers observe and make notes about Halley’s Comet. Also Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c. 276 – c.194 BC), a Greek, correctly calculate the Earth’s dimensions.

165 BC: Chinese astronomers notice sunspots for the first time.

c. 130 BC: the astronomer Hipparchus of Nicea (b. 147 BC), a Greek, correctly calculates the distance to the Earth’s Moon and also rediscovers the precession of the Equinoxes.

You will see from the dates above that clearly not everyone let nature and the stars govern their lives, as the common farmer or hunter did. Some men actually put pen to paper, but before pen and paper even existed, and tried to work out ‘why these manifestations took place?’.

These individuals must have been remarkable men to have worked these measurements out by calculation, observation by the naked eye and rationalization alone.

What Is Fishing Equipment

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Fishing equipment is called fishing tackle by fishing aficionados and it usually includes to rods, lines, hooks, sinkers, spears, lures, bait, reels, nets, and so on. The fishing gear that is attached at the end of a line is referred to as terminal tackle

The word tackle referring to fishing equipment comes from ‘takel’ which first meant the rigging of a ship, that is, the gear consisting of ropes supporting a ship’s masts and sails. Later, the same word was recorded to have a another meaning, that of apparatus for fishing and that meaning has been retained ever since then.

The most basic fishing gear consists of a rod, a line, a hook, a lure, a bait and a weight or sinker. The line is a basic string especially made for fishing that is both long, thin and yet strong, so that fish do not notice it. There are various things that an angler asks about when buying a fishing line, such as its resistance, stretch, strength et cetera. The line will be selected based on what kind of fish the angler intends to catch.

The sinker or weight, also called a plummet, is actually a weight that helps in casting the hook and the bait as far as possible from the shoreline or from the boat that the fisherman is using. They are usually made of lead as their purpose is also to sink and to get the bait closer to the fish in the water as fast as possible. However, lead sinkers have been banned in some parts of the world, especially the really small ones, which are often called ‘shot’. If ingested by birds or other fish, the lead, which is known for its high toxicity level, will cause the death of the animal.

Another basic piece of fishing equipment is the hook. This is a device meant for attaching the bait and for hooking into the fish’s mouth. It is attached to the line and the fisherman can choose from a very wide range of shapes, sizes and materials.

Last but not least, the fishing equipment is not efficient without bait or lure. A lure is a device tied at the end of the line that looks and moves something like the prey of the fish you are after. Its purpose is to catch the attention of the fish with its colour and movement. Artificial flies and sand eels fall into this category. When the fish bites the lure, it gets hooked.

Bait, on the other hand, is the item actually attached to the hook. Bait is usually of two types: animal or foodstuff. ‘Animal’ refers to small fish or other water creatures, insects or crawlers. ‘Foodstuff’ refers to grains, like corn, bread or whatever the angler believes might work.

The General Psychology Of Tennis (Part 1)

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Tennis psychology is the same as understanding the workings of your opponent’s mind, and assessing the effect of your own game on his/her mental viewpoint and also understanding the psychological effects resulting from the various external causes on your own mind.

Nevertheless, it is also true that you no one can be a successful psychologist of others without first understanding his own mental processes. So, you have to study the effect on yourself of the same thing happening under different conditions. This is because people react differently in different moods and under different circumstances.

You must realize the effect on your game of the resulting irritation, pleasure, confusion, or whatever other form your reaction takes. Does it increase your prowess? If so, try for it, but never offer it to your opponent. Does it deprive you of concentration? If so, either remove the cause, or if that is not possible, try to ignore it.

Once you have correctly judged your own reaction to circumstances, observe your opponents in order to decide their characters. Like characters react similarly, and you can judge men of your own kind by yourself. Different temperaments you must try to compare with people whose reactions you already know.

A person who can regulate his/her own mental processes runs an great chance of determining those of another for the minds works along definite lines of thought and can be examined. One may only control one’s own mental processes after examining them meticulously.

The steady, unemotional baseline player is seldom a quick thinker. If he were, he would not stay on the baseline. The physical appearance of a player is often a fairly clear indicator of his/her kind of mind. The stolid, easy-going player, who usually displays the baseline game, does so because he hates to activate up his/her slow mind to think out a safe strategy of getting to the net.

However, then there is the other type of baseline player, who would prefer to stay at the rear of the court while supervising an attack intending to break up your game. He is a much more dangerous player and a deep, keen thinking antagonist. He obtains his/her results by changing his/her length and direction and worrying you with the variance of his/her game. This player is a very good psychologist.

The first type of player mentioned above simply hits the ball with little thought about what he is actually doing, while the latter always has a definite strategy and adheres to it.

Rapid Weight Loss

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Other than physical appearance, weight affects a person in various ways. It could be the overall quality of life, self-confidence, depression, health risks, or physical incapacities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight, which is why a lot of people are searching for a weight loss program that will trim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, jaw-dropping body.

The first thing that an overweight individual ought to do is find a health care expert to recommend the best weight loss plan. This will only be done after a complete physical examination, which will to the determination of a proprietary weight loss plan. To shed excess pounds fast and effectively, four aspects of one’s life has to be altered: what to eat, how to eat, behaviour and amount of activity.

Below are some quick recommendations that can change an over-weight person’s life:

1: Quick weight loss is achieved by a multi-faceted plan that comprises mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, dietary supplements. Begin by following a diet plan that can be easily incorporated into your current way of life. Follow an exercise regimen that requires a minimum of fifteen minutes a day lively walking, running, swimming and/or dancing.

2: Set realistic targets. The ability to focus and have a proper mindset enables a person on a diet to quickly shed those extra kilos. With discipline and a proper mind set, a dieter will never be discouraged and lose focus.

3: Listen to your body. Each person’s body reacts in a different way to different quick weight loss programs. Try swapping one program for another to assess the body’s reaction. An exercise program ought to be suited to your body, as some can not exercise as rigorously as others. If walking is all that you can do, then walk, since this is one of the best exercises. Remember that muscles burn calories so it’s definitely a good idea to put on a little more muscle – it looks sexy too.

4: Eat more fibre because it makes a person feel full sooner and stays in the stomach longer, slowing down the pace at which you will be hungry again. For example, a few slices of whole grain bread will stay in the gut longer and stave off hunger longer than white bread, which converts to sugar faster. giving you a quick sugar spike, which soon passes, leaving you hungry again.

5: Keep away from fried food especially deep-fried, as it contains a lot of fat. However, although fish and chicken are considered to be leaner than beef, this white meat can contain more fat than beef when it is fried. It is recommended for those on a strict diet opt for grilled food as it does not contain much fat after the food is cooked.

6: Take in plenty of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushing’ and since weight loss depends on how the body gets rid of bodily waste, the body must stay hydrated.

So, all in all, discipline and consistency is the key to fast weight loss. Light dieting, exercise and the correct nutritional supplements taken regularly everyday will result in a faster weight loss than having a massive, but short-lived campaign followed by a return to the bad old habits, because this only results in gaining more weight than before the diet was started.

Bass Fishing Tips

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

It is very handy to get some tips on bass fishing when you are a beginner. Firstly, it it is important to know that bass are fish whose metabolism depends on the temperature of the surrounding water. Their metabolism rises or falls proportionally with the increase or decrease in water temperature. Therefore, if the water where they happen to be is cold, as it is in deeper waters, they are less active and so eat a lot less.

Furthermore, in about January one should start bass fishing in warmer and warmer waters because the bass tend to leave cold deep waters in order to spawn. Also, during the Autumn bass begin to move on towards colder and deeper waters where they would be safer during the cold season. However, fishermen should not expect them to migrate great distances quickly. Their cycles of moving from one place to the next as the seasons change can take several months.

It is also good to know when you are bass fishing that these fish are very sociable: that is, they tend to shoal together into quite large schools, which generally consist of fish of the same size. That obviously means that, if you catch some bass in one spot, you are likely to catch more in the same area so long as you do not throw the fish you’ve already caught back into the water dead as that could well panic the rest of the shoal.

In addition, bass fishing areas are fairly easy to spot. One should take into account that they are predators but not very active ones as their favorite meal is not actually one they have to struggle for. They would rather wait patiently and lazily for a victim to come by and then snap it up.

Bass fish often go for struggling or slow prey even if they are not normally on their usual diet. Their usual diet consists of crawfish, minnows, worms, insects, frogs and such like. Once a fisherman has learned these facts about bass, together with their mating customs, catching them is much easier and much more frequent.

On the other hand, these fish are prey themselves so they need cover as well. That is why bass fishing is carried out in areas where they can find safety in and around small or big rocks, weeds and other shady or sunny, well-lit areas where it is difficult for them to be spotted.

Success at bass fishing also depends on the type of bait chosen by the fisherman. You should vary the bait according to both the season ” spring, summer, autumn or winter ” and the spawning cycle of this fish species. Beginners should not forget that there are always experienced anglers ready to provide tips – just don’t be afraid to ask because the most effective bait does vary from one region to another.

If you are keen on fishing and would like to find out more, please pop along to our website called Gone Fishing Also published at Bass Fishing Tips.
